Sows verses Boars as Pets... **please read**
I get emails all the time for people looking for sows as a pet.  I have a general response that I give and it does get old, so I figured I would post it here and let everyone read.  Unlike popularly found written all over the pet sites and pet books, I do NOT highly recommend a sow as a pet.  And I sure don't recommend that they easily live together with their like sex peacefully.  Sows are more tempermental than boars period.  Some are sweet as pie and do very well as a pet and even as a beloved child's show pig.  However, more times than not in our experience they tend to be moody and hard on fellow cagemates of their same sex.  And of all the litters born we ratio a 30% sow birth rate compared to boars.  That means they generally are higher priced if offered at all for pets.  Now again I hear over and over how bad boars fight and cannot live together.  My boars live in community cages from the time they are weaned.  Seldom do we even have senior breeding boars that either cannot babysit the young boys or live with another senior breeding boar in between sows.  And being a mother of three children that show, I can tell you they look for a boars to show and handle because they are much much easier.  My oldest will tell you specifically that they have way better personalities.  At any given moment you can find at least three long haired boars being coated by my kids.  Sows generally only one if they feel like messing with them.
