Cavy News from the barn.....

June 2012  Well this spring has been extremely busy one for all of our family.  Not only did we survive the Horse and Pony shows, we also survived the few pig shows we did make.  Unfortunately there was a conflict of dates for the Longview show this month, but we will shoot for that next year.

Many new things have happened here at the caviary these past 2 months.  We have reworked some of our cages and completely replaced others.  After years of dealing with individual coating cages of only 10, we found we needed to expand that number.  So we did an easy remake so to speak and purchased shelving units from Lowe's and plastic bins from Target.  Their bins have wide bases and straight sides making them a bit more roomy for the piggies.  We also put in our anual a/c replacement.

On top of all of this we have taken in a few pigs from various breeders.  That also means we have taken on new breeds for us.  Or returning breeds for us! For the second time (and I know many like them and I have also not) we have added Abysinians to the barn.  The two pairs are actually nice temperment wise.  But because of our past experience with them the girls thought it would be fun to name them with dark names as a jist.  The main breeding Boar Monster Maker is an absolute doll and a real charmer.  So maybe there is hope.  Not sure if the quality is the best as we just do not know, but I know their line is some of the best in the United States.  We also have Texels and Peruvians which were added toward the beginning of the year.  It is nice to branch out some.  We still adore our Silkies and Coronets as well as the Americans.  We have added some colors to our American line to help both the Roan Project and the Tan project.  We have Black Americans, Lilac Tan, and new stock on the Black Tans.  The Roans have seemed to take on a life of their own now and we are ending up with more Satins than just American roans.  As long as we can keep the quality going that is our main goal.  Texels have expanded to add a couple interesting boars which are Red and Tan.  Tan Texels are not showable at this time, but a unique variation for us.

Now we hunker down and try to survive this summer heat.  The cavies are spoiled in their a/c and litters are arriving without issue so far.  We are hoping to have some great new show stock available over this sizzling time, but also a new show team for Fall.  Most of our Winter/Spring show team will be put into breeding.  If you are interested in any piggies follow us on our Facebook page for updates.  Organizing a meeting time will be difficult with our schedule and this heat, but you never know.  Happy Southern Summer Everyone!  Be careful out there in the HEAT!

February 2012,  Our show on the 11th was small but a lot of fun.  Most of our animals that we have for show are not senior weight so at this point we are just looking for judges remarks and happy to shoot for Best of Breed.  I foresee the young ones are going to become highly competitive here shortly.  Satin Silkie Himalayans were shown open again - only 2 boars this time.  Both got rave reviews on their types, coats, and especially their points.  These were the 4th and 5th judges to tell us their points are the best in the United States. We are hopeful to see a fully coated Himalayan in the future.  Many were put in breeding here the beginning of February leaving us with 2 show boars.  We did get Best of Breed Silkie Satin both shows,

The Roan project got great reviews when Amy put her black roan American on the table.  She won best Intermediate and judges said she is making some fantastic progress.  We have yet another litter on the ground and more coming.  And we are adding in McCorpin's black line as well now to continue keeping our type outstanding!

In the Youth show the girls did well with a lot of Junior pigs.  They got Best of Breed in both Silkie and Coronet.  Silkie daughters of Bastian were hot on the table.  Good reviews on the Tan Americans as well, but again not to senior weight just yet.  We are looking forward to breeding these boys here shortly.  One breeder commented that these Tans were better than his.  Let's hope we do them justice with offspring!

We are off to Crosby on the 25th and then will not show Cavies until May 5th.  Our Horse and Pony Show season will be in full swing beginning March 4th.  That will give us a bit of time to get some more competitive offspring on the ground and coat out the long hairs even longer!

January 2012, Well as many farms and animal breeders/pet owners have done, we have also followed suit in starting our own Facebook page.  We will strive to update pictures there as it is much easier to do so than on the website.  News and updates will be there as well. Maybe this will help me to keep up with our caviary!  We have some good shows to attend in 2012 that we are really looking forward to.  Our show team has come together and many fantastic babies are on the ground and growing up to add to the team.  Our broken American line seems to be revived!  After a change of feed we are doing much better.  I will do what I can to post here as often as I can but I encourage everyone to come like our Facebook Page!

November 2011, This year has flown by.  We have had our ups and downs with the cavy herd.  Our ability to have healthy happy litters has been a challange it seems for us.  Recently we took some advice from our fellow breeder and cut feed back to only using Manna Pro Gro with hay and vitamin C in the water.  Within a couple of weeks of doing so we seem to have a baby boom in the pig barn!  I will be updating our page for litters and babies for sale.

2011 has been productive in bringing us some new colors into our present breeds.  Amy has been busy working on developing a Roan American line and is now having some very much deserved sucess.  In September she put her first Roan American Boar on the table and had very good remarks from both judges.  As her line grows I do believe she will have more than just good remarks to add to that.  We also picked up some Tan Americans from a breeder in Oklahoma.  For now we are looking to show the pair of boars we purchased and will begin breeding this winter.  And we also have some Satin Silkies Himalayans.  We also have a new line of Rainbow Coronets in the works.  None have been presented for show at this time.  Look for some of these new colors to hit the show tables in December and in early 2012.

Our Pony and Horse training, showing, and buying/selling has taken on a life of it's own.  We seem to be constantly busy and have made some really great progress with some difficult horses.  We have enjoyed some break from ACHA/NCHA shows.  The girls have kept working with cutting horses and were able to show some at one show.  Both girls have also suceeded in showing Hunter and Jumper.  My student base has grown a lot and the work with the Crossroads Pony Club has kept me swamped.  Overall a wonderful year!

2010 has been quite the year.  We had a rough summer with our herd and put some finances into a new Caviary barn.  As of September it was finished and we began moving the herd into their new abode.  It is twice as big and a lot more roomy for us to enjoy our pigs.  We repaired cages, removed some cages that were ready to retire, and set up our watering system.  We installed a nice exhaust fan that works more like an old fashioned attic fan.  We LOVE that thing!  It gets the pigs some nice fresh air and really works as a whole barn fan when needed.  Beginning of October we placed some of our herd back into breeding.  We are just now seeing litters come due and a few babies on the ground.  As they near weaning we will post pictures of them for sale.  Decisions on keepers and sale pigs will not happen until weaning time.

We had a busy year with the ACHA.  We hauled about half as much as the prior year, but still found ourselves running and gone nearly every weekend.  Even with missing a lot of shows, Amy managed to get Reserve Champion this year!  And her sister Niki was just behind her by a couple of points making her 3rd int he World Standings.  I cannot say how proud I am with my daughters and their hard work with the Cutting Horses.  They worked many hours with their trainer in helping him warm up his training horses to show.  They clocked in many hours and miles loping in the saddle of many different horses.

And we got some time back into our show with the Ponies.  Lessons have picked up for me and the kids had some new project ponies arrive this year.  My kids have saddle broke 4 ponies this year and have at least 4 more in the works.  We also have a couple foals that will be due in 2011.  In November we attended a nice rated Shetland/Miniature show in Bryan, TX.  That was an absolute Blast!  All the kids did fantastic.  Niki brought her new little filly and managed to beat an undefented Congress Champion.  And Amy also showed her new Gelding and won a Jr Championship for them! And Jared got his first chance to show at a rated show other than our little local show.  He did fantastic!  He had a bit of a issue with a trail piece (more pony conflicts than his ability) but handled it with such skill I was so pleased.  If you would like to learn more about our Ponies and or lessons available with me, please visit our Farm site at:

We are looking forward to the Christmas show with the Lone Star Cavy Club on December 11th.  Our 2010 show string will be there in force and some will be retiring to the breeding pen afterward.  We will also have some stock available (hopefully) as well as some for my girlfriend Susan.  You are welcome to contact us before the show to see our sales list.  I won't know it until close to the show date as babies are still being born.  Hope to see all our friends there and of course some new faces always make the show better!

DECEMBER 2009 ....an explosion of SATIN AMERICANS!  Just when I had given up hope on my Silver Agouti/White American line ever taking off again, it has blossomed.  We not only have some amazing babies but also some babies that are so shiney they hurt the eyes.  It always amazes me that such sheen of these satins come from plain old Americans.  Grand sons of Galena and sons and daughters of Elvis will be boosting our will silver line again.

Off to the show December 12th.  The girls have several nice animals to show that are not even pictured here on the site.  We will see how things go.  As for me, well I have two young Juniors! LOL  Figures Mom gets the babies.  See everyone at the show!

News from the November Show:  The Merinos have arrived safe and sound back to the barn.  We have a few sows and two boars.  Also a special thanks to Kay Skillern of Anglehair Caviary for a wonderful Texel boar to help the Merino program.  These animals are going to be a lot of fun to work with.  Thanks again Sheri!

Wins at the show were big and so exciting this time around.  Niki took both Best In Shows with first her Coronet Roan boar from Susan at Platinum Pigs Caviary, and then the second show with her home bred American AOM Boar Elliot!  Such a wonderful win for her!  And Amy didn't do so bad either.  She took Reserve behind Niki's Coronet with her young American AOM Sow Universal Remote.  That was a great boost for Amy's color line in Americans.  Congrats Girls!  We are proud of you!!

November 2009
We are gearing up for our winter show season.  We will be attending the Magnolia show this Saturday, November 14th.  I will be busy with show secretary, but girls will be available for sales and questions.  Susan will be with us as usual.  She will also have pigs available if anyone would like to contact her directly. See our sale page for updates.

This past few months have been so busy.  We have had a lot of horse work as well as pigs coming and going.  We were blessed with some awesome stock from Alex Hudson of Keepsake Caviary.  Some of the stock is directly Red Rock and is proving to mix very well with our line.  We are also working very hard to build our satin silkie and satin coronet line.  None for the show table yet, but progress is being made finally.  This summer proved hard with such high temperatures.

We are also excited to announce the coming of a new breed.  Special Thanks goes to Sheri Dixon of Giddy Pigs is allowing us to purchase a beginning line of Merinos!  Sheri has been showing them with our club using a standard from another country.  Merinos are not recognized just yet in the U.S.   We are excited to try our hand at a very new developing breed here in the U.S.  However, the girls and I are very aware that they are to be prized as Sheri has put many many years of hard work into these guys to build what she does have.  Again, cannot say Thank You enough to Sheri for this opportunity.  Hope to have a page with pictures soon posted.

Happy Thanksgiving to All!

Ok, not cavy news, but news of Cowgirl Caviary's owners.  Miss Amy Hunnicutt and Miss Nicole Hunnicutt took the American Cutting Horse World Show by storm.  Amy won her first 2009 Jr Youth World Champion title and then proceeded to win the World Show title as well!  Younger sister Nicole was honored with a very special award of "Most Improved Youth" for 2009. Nicole also placed 3rd in the World Standings this year...her first year out!  It has been a long busy year of hauling and showing, but boy has it paid off.  We are SOOO Proud of you girls both!!!

September 2009 has been a busy month.  It has seen the birth of some incrediable roans in our caviary. We are seeing colors not normally found in some awesome evenly mixed roaned colors.  Look for them on the show table in winter.  Also a new and fabulous bloodline has been introduced thanks to Alexis Hudson aka Keepsake Caviary.  Alex has also made her way back to Texas so we are looking forward to seeing her at up and coming shows.

Age caught up with our beloved Cowgirl's Mystery.  He passed peacefully in August 2009.  His bloodline lives on with up and coming sons, daughter, grandsons and granddaughters.

The summer of 2009 has marked it's entrance with the retiring of a beloved foundation sow.  Cowgirl's Sparkleworks has officially been sent to the baby pens to be a grandma.  She is the ONLY sow from the magical breeding of Conrad's Felix and Conrad's Mary Mary.  Both of her parents have passed and one of her brothers as well.  Sparks produced some fantastic babies before her retirement.  The last litters with Windswept's Rocket include Apollo, This Devil Wears Prada, Half N Half A Sparkle, Electric June Bug, and Sparks New Image.  All but one of their babies are in coating and we expect to see some good results on the table.  One of her daughters, Half N Half A Sparkle is in breeding now instead of going to show.  That was a hard choice as she was also so nice.  Her brother Cowgir's Peppy San (aka Jose) is still busy in breeding between our caviary and Susan's - aka Platinum Pigs.  As usual he is producing some fine offspring.  One of her daughters and her brother, Cowgirl's Cowboy, are now with Alex Hudson in Colorado.  Cowboy has been a key in helping to develop her caviary as well.

In March of 2009 we lost an all time great in our American line.  His name was Caboodle's Yogi and his offspring have been a corner stone in helping our silver and solid broken line.  Yogi was 4 years old.  His most famous daughter, Cowgirl's Galena, also had her first litter at the age of 2 years and 2 months in April of 2009.  Yogi never left a sow unbred and blessed us with many litters after his passing.  He is now survived by his up and coming son, Cowgirl's Yogi Bear.  Not only a fantastic breeding sire, but one awesome pet.  Yogi's adventures in the caviary are so missed.
